Monobrow - Monobrow (2010)

Image
'Monobrow' from Ottowa, Canada. A wonderful instrumental jam/stoner rock outfit. This is their self-released debut album, check it out. For fans of Electric Magma, Earthless, Karma To Burn,... Thanks to the band for sending me this! 'Monobrow was formed in Ottawa early 2009 when bassist Sam Beydoun and guitarist Paul Slater (formerly of Vancouver's Sir Hedgehog) first jammed with drummer Brian Ahopelto of Acres fame. Sharing a common love for adventurous, underground heavy rock in its many guises, the group quickly built up an impressive repertoire of original songs over the next few months. Monobrow's sound can be described as riff-based hard rock, with psychedelic flourishes, and a sense of jamming contained within strong songwriting.' - Heavy Planet myspace.com/monobrowmanband monobrowmanband.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Dopefight - Buds (2010)

Image
Checking out some releases that flew under my radar this year, this one instantly amazed me. 'Dopefight', a trio from Brighton, UK. Owen on guitar/vocals, Paul on bass and Ant on drums. Rather uptempo stoner/ sludge with some HUGE riffs. Read more about this great band at The Obelisk & Doommantia . myspace.com/fightdopefight Get your riff laden candy here . Sula Bassana - The Night (2009)

Image
'Sula Bassana is the alias for a talented musician named Dave Schmidt. Being master of several instruments he's able to retrospect to a lot of collaborations composing and performing his music. Experiences on stage making spacy, trippy and Krautrock inspired music initiated in 1986 as a keyboard player of the electronic duo Solaris. With the project Twilight Network he gave the last electronic concert in 1991 at the Zeiss Grossplanetarium in Berlin. Some years later he met Hans-Peter Ringholz to form the band Liquid Visions, now playing the bass guitar and producing space rock music similar to Hawkwind.' - Progarchives Guest vocals by Stefan Koglek (Colour Haze) on 'The Night'. myspace.com/sulabassana sulabassana.de Get it; US / EU MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2 Scans Download

This is their first Demo EP from 2006. The band is releasing their debut full-length album soon... myspace.com/sectorillusion MP3@192Kbps Download or Download 2

Buckaduzz - The Big Slow EP (2010)

Image
'Buckaduzz formed in the early summer of 2008 in the Sandvika-area of southern Norway, and consists of four members. They started out with the intent of making heavy blues driven music, and draws inspiration from all corners of the music scene.' - last.fm Fat, fuzzy, stoner/ blues rock groovyness. You get 3 great tracks on 'The Big Slow'. The last one takes it easy near the end, but has a great pacing & atmosphere to it. Overall this is a verry wel executed effort with ten-ton fuzzadelic riffage & dirty agressive vocals. Curious what these guys have in store for the future! Thanks to the band for sending me this one. myspace.com/buckaduzz MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

(Updated) Best of 2010

Image
The end of another great year in music is nigh, so here's the best of the best I laid my ears on. A personal selection of this year's favorite records with some quick opinions. Enjoy! 1. Bongripper - Satan Worshipping Doom One of the best (& still highly underrated) artists in the genre as it is today. They prove it like no other with this instrumental masterpiece. The heaviest, most dynamic stoner/sludge/doom album I heard in a long time. So down-tuned and heavy as fuck. This is the real soundtrack to the apocalypse, forget about the rest... 2. Stonehelm - Stonehelm Skull crushing riffage & hypnotic smoked out vocals, no need to say more. I think an album cover can say a lot about the music that's behind it, Stonehelm is a band that's part of that philosophy. The best newcomer & biggest surprise this year. Let's hope for an official release through Dead Earth Records soon.. 3. Fatso Jetson - Archaic Volumes Another fantastic release by the Lalli cousins

Lo-Pan - Lo-Pan (2006)

Windhand - Practice Space Demo (2010)

Image
I've heard lots of promising new artists this year, and 'Windhand' is definitely one of them. This is some heavy psyched out vintage doom, made in Richmond, Virginia. 'I like the performance of female singers in doom, such as in Blood Ceremony, Jex Thoth or Devil's Blood. Neither nightingale voices nor wild hardcore screams: in doom female vocalists are able to give a great sense of melody without taking away a single bit of the sinister, creepy atmospheres and of the filth and oppression created by heavy distortion and by the stone heavy riffs. And, I don't know why, they add a certain vintage touch as well to the sound. Maybe because they recall the occult psychedelic aura of the seminal band Coven ...' - Doommantia myspace.com/windhand MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Lord Vicar - Fear No Pain (2008)

Image
'As the final nails were hammered to the coffin of Reverend Bizarre (1995-2007, R.I.P.), guitar player Peter Vicar started to follow his vision of a new True Doom Metal band. He felt forced to fulfill his need to compose and play this most arcane form of metal in the way it was meant to be, full of intensity, cruelty, heaviness, and force. Still firmly walking in the footsteps of Saint Vitus, Trouble, Witchfinder General and Pentagram, this new band brings together an international lineup of four devoted metalheads.' Another highly underrated slab of Finnish doom. Debut full-length, released on The Curch Within Records . myspace.com/lordvicar MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2 Scans Download

Beam Orchestra - Demo (2010)

Image
"The three BEAM ORCHESTRA dudes started rumbling through Saxony (Germany) since autumn 2008. They where influenced by stoner-rock and so they found their style, rude stoner-rock-straightforward with full speed ahead. The bass on up to the marking, make your head banging and clubs chattering. You meet these guys in little dirty clubs, adequate to their sound. Let' s see, how it goes on!" Thanks to Franz! Beam Orchestra has a great, accessible & honest sound in the world of fuzzy stoner rock. Check it out! myspace.com/beamorchestra MP3@VBR Download or Download 2

Electric Moon - Lunatics (2010)

Image
Electric Moon came into existence in 2009 - a new project with cosmic traveller Sula Bassana as the driving force. Bassist Komet Lulu (responsible for corporate design and artwork) as well as Pablo Carneval (drums). In 2010 they worked out their debut 'Lunatics', released on German Nasoni label and consisting of long spacey trips in the vein of earlier output with Sula Bassana involved, energetic and hypnotic as is well known, however this time with the focus on a more groovy and acid approach. - Progarchives Together with Sula Bassana's 'Kosmonauts' one of this year's best releases in space/ psychedelic rock. Highly recommended! For fans of Secret Saucer, Farflung, 35007, Oresund Space Collective, Litmus,... myspace.com/electricmoons Get this one (with some nice shirts) here . Hypnos 69 - Legacy (2010)

Image
Latest full-length album. Released on CD (Digipack) & Vinyl. 'What’s increasingly come to make Hypnos 69 unique sound-wise is the band’s use of jazz structures and classic prog instrumentation – King Crimson’s sax, Jethro Tull’s flute, everyone’s mellotron, etc. – but the band fuses these aspects of their sound together with a driving rock that’s grown over time to be the expansive, encompassing presentation of Legacy. The album starts and ends with tracks both over 17 minutes long (who doesn’t love a long opener?), and though we’re treated to a variety of sounds and styles in between, somehow Hypnos 69 manage to remain Hypnos 69 for the duration.' -Full review at The Obelisk & another one on Lords Of Metal . Hypnos 69 - Timeline Traveller (2002)

Image
'Hypnos 69 was founded in 1994, Diest, Belgium. When Steve and Dave Houtmeyers decide in the summer of ‘94 to found a band with Tom Vanlaer, also the story of a band that would bring new life to the ’60s and ’70s psychedelic underground rock-scene of today began: Hypnos 69. The name was appropriatly taken from the ancient Greek god of Sleep and Subconsciousness. The number 69 stands for equilibrium and stability; properties that can be retrieved in the marked sound of the band.' - last.fm Originally released in 2002 on RocknRollRadio with alternate artwork . This is the 2006 reissue, released on Elektrohasch. Get it at the ATH store . Torche - Songs For Singles (2010)

Image
Torche's latest EP from September 2010. Released through Hydrahead records on both CD & Vinyl. This one kinda flew under my radar when it was first released. Still, I think 'Songs For Singles' is a really accessible & highly enjoyable record. Essential food for any Torche fan or 'modernized' sludge metal/ rock in general. Solid and positive tunes. Slut Machine - Welcome To The Machine EP (2010)

Thorr-Axe - Roots Of The Mountain (2010)

Image
'On November 2, 2007, Thorr-Axe was formed in Bloomfield, Indiana by Tucker Thomasson (Guitar and Vocals) and Travis Roach (Bass and Vocals) for the purpose of creating genuinely heavy music. Presently Thorr-Axe is looking for shows, radio opportunities, and looking for label support' - reverbnation.com/thorraxe When I first heard this band I was instantly amazed by their huge sound. Highly influenced by Sleep/ High On Fire with a heavy focus on epic riffs & aggressive punk vocals. But the thing that amazed me the most are the teenagers behind the instruments. Like Elder & Cosmic Vishnu , this is another young band with the right amount of balls that cannot be missed. Thorr-Axe is going back in the studio beginning next year, so be warned! 'Roots Of The Mountain' is their first self-released demo from January 2010. Ramesses - We Will Lead You To Glorious Times (2004)

Since Ramesses's latest offering is without a doubt on this year's top 10 list (maybe I'll make a 'special' post about that), I took some time to dig in their older work. So here's another great one, their first EP from 2004. Released on This Dark Reign recordings. myspace.com/ramesses666 ATH store MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2 Scans Download
