From The Minds Of Madness

Image
Here's a special post to end the month. 'From The Minds Of Madness' is a book that features over 350 heavy metal bands from the past to the present and how they came up with their names. Any fan of of this blog & (underground) metal music in general should get a hold of this unholy bible. Discover the story behind bandnames like Kylesa, Viaje A 800, 35007, Yawning Man, Black Pyramid, Beehover, Hooded Menace, Mustasch, My Dying Bride,... An interesting & enlightening read! From the introduction; "Around 2009, I started getting interested in why and how some bands chose their names. There were a multitude of sites out there with information like this but sadly they were lacking any heavy metal band name origins. Sure there some of the big names like AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Black Sabbath and the list goes on. Other than that, the rest of the bands on these websites were pop music, punk, rock, country and even some rap. I was pissed off by the lack

Mars Red Sky - Mars Red Sky Promo (2011)

Image
Excellent 70's minded psychedelic rock from Bordeaux, France. Equally influenced by the old school vibes of Sabbath & Zeppelin. In modern times: think Quest For Fire, White Hills, Danava, Hypnos 69 & add some extra FUZZ. This album is an absolutely great offering with some warm musical surprises. Dusty desert rock for space travellers... myspace.com/marsredsky marsredsky.com Psysical needs: Emergence Music

Tombs - Path Of Totality (2011)

Image
Recently got my hands on this one after reading some great reviews . And I was quite unfamiliar with this obscure band, until now.. I would highly recommend this release to anyone that is into extreme (& rather progressive) metal. Tombs is a one of a kind band, influenced by many things. On here, you'll find Sludge, Doom, Grindcore, Post-, Black & Death Metal mixed into one apocalyptic wall of sound. Path Of Totality has to be one of the most hard hitting, original & conceptual metal releases of 2011. Get this on Vinyl if you can! myspace.com/tombsbklyn Tombs on Relapse Records. Myty Konkeror - I Miss The Future. (2011)

Image
Here's a unique gem hailing from Brooklyn/New Haven. 'Myty Konkeror', a distinctive band that is kinda hard to describe. With the blog in mind: think Melvins & Fatso Jetson. These guys bring a mix of experimental/ drone/ rock/ ambient / noise/ psychedelic sounds. Try it out! 'MYTY KONKEROR takes a meditative approach to rock. A noisy three-piece from New Haven, CT and Brooklyn, NY, their sonic explorations incorporate fragments of proto-metal, shoegaze, kraut-rock, and noise, melding into what some have described as hypnotic scrap-metal... ...Since their debut release, MYTY KONKEROR have been playing shows with local and regional artists while recording and producing their first full-length album, I miss the future. These songs are looser and more expansive than their previous efforts, yet their distinct dissonance and hypnotic hooks remain.' mytykonkeror.bandcamp.com myspace.com/mytykonkeror Debut full-length, released on Twin Lakes Records . ÖfÖ Am - The Beast Within (2011)

Image
'ÖfÖ Am', an exciting 3 piece instrumental stoner/ hard rock band from Montpellier, France. These guys cought my attention through a recent split EP with Karma To Burn . ÖfÖ Am created their own distinct instrumental sound, taking influence from classic rock to psychedelic, stoner & hard rock. Their debut full-length 'The Beast Within' is something special & original. To get an idea: Rotor meeting up with Karma To Burn & Serpent Throne to create a conceptual album. This is a monster that swings & rocks, while staying accessible and fun. Hear it! weareofoam.bandcamp.com myspace.com/weareofoam Get their first EP on vinyl through Head Records & their Split 7'' with Karma To Burn through Napalm Records ( Limited to 666 Copies!) . Karma To Burn - V (2011)

Image
Finally! The latest offering by the legends of instrumental stoner rock/ metal. Karma To Burn, a name that comes with the genre (& this blog). Kinda missed it at release since it just came out of nowhere in a really short time.. Anyhow, I've read some good reviews & bad reviews on this one. After seeing these guys perform 2 times at their comeback tour I was a little sceptical about their collaboration with Daniel Davis ( Year Long Disaster ), since the band (quite ironically) added vocals to their mighty instrumental sound. In the end I think this kinda broke the consistency on their fourth album. But since this marked their comeback; what the hell, I loved it anyway . So, here is 'V'. And after a few spins this is absolutely not a bad album. But in all honesty, I must say this the most forgettable Karma To Burn record yet. There are some great moments on V, but I feel there is a lack of 'magical KTB energy' on here. This is a rather uninspired representa

Agnes Vein - Duality (2010)

Image
Pitch black sludge/ doom from Thessaloniki, Greece. For fans of Moss, Cough, Coffinworm, Tombs, Dragged Into Sunlight,... Influenced by the legendary Bathory & Neurosis. DSW - Dawn Storm Watchers (2011)

Image
Need some fresh stoner rock with all the basic ingredients? Look no further. DSW delivers warm 'n fuzzy grooves from Italy, following in the footsteps of bands like Clutch, Kyuss & Truckfighters. Great to see something like this popping up in 2011, keeping the desert vibes alive without any bullshit! No Anchor - Real Pain Supernova (2011)

Image
'No Anchor' from Brisbane, Australia. A band with a unique destructive sound. A hybrid monster of stoner/ fuzz rock, sludge, doom & drone. Their energetic & distorted sound could be compared to some of the early rocking Boris tunes (Pink, Akuma No Uta), but played really angry & exhausted (Eyehategod comes to mind). This album is the perfect excuse to blow up your speakers (and get bigger ones). Huge! 'Real Pain Supernova' definitely comes recommended.. 'The album will be available in 2 x LP from the band's website www.noanchorband.com (and their bandcamp). Almost all of the album packaging is hand made by us and our screenprinting friend Matt Deasy. A free/donation digital version of the album will be available online on the 9th of May 2011. Unless, that is, something bad happens. And it might.' -Vinyl mastering done by Mell Dettmer (Boris, Earth & Sunn) noanchor.bandcamp.com noanchorband.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Sorceress - Demo (2011)

Image
Impressive instrumental post-sludge from Canada. This is a great demo that brings us back to the early days of the Savannah, Georgia scene. It's hard not to mention that these guys love their Baroness & Kylesa. Sorceress is a an ambitious band, and they sure know how to deliver some solid grooves. I highly enjoyed this Demo, and would recommend it to anyone that is looking for some post-barbarian sludge with an edge! Any fan of Kylesa, Black Tusk, Baroness & Howl should give this one a shot. sorceress.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Winter - Into Darkness / Eternal Frost (1999)

Some rotten old school metal between all the fresh tunes. This is a classic & highly essential album for all you death/ doom lovers out there.
