Le Kraken - Exalt (2011)

Image
Hard-hitting (post-)sludge from Montréal, Canada. Le Kraken creates a thick wall of pounding riffs, drums & depraved vocals. A dirty, fuzzed out sound that goes perfectly with this kind of music. Think early Isis, Godflesh, Neurosis,.. Worth checking out! myspace.com/krakenrockmusic lekraken.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Anima Morte - The Nightmare Becomes Reality (2011)

Image
'In this day and age where artists and bands are taking the 60’s and 70’s as inspirational grounds a particular release sometimes stands out. Anima Morte is an instrumental band who digs in the soundtrack and big conceptual albums of that time and tries to recreate the sound and feeling of acts like King Crimson, ELP and Rick Wakeman. This album features the horror movie theme and they manage to perform this very nicely. They state the composers as Ennio Morricone and Fabio Frizzi as big influences and that shows. The music has a lot of tension building and suspense, according to the theme of course.' - Lords Of Metal Latest full-length, released on Transubstans records . Anima Morte - Face The Sea Of Darkness (2007)

Image
Here's something quite different for a change; Anima Morte or "vintage Italian horror music from Sweden".This band brings us back to the good old days where horror had weird, proggy, unique & memorable soundtracks. This is a highly atmospheric, eerie & a refreshing take on the usual tunes. Even if you don't know a thing about Italian horror (and it's soundtracks), you should give it a listen. This is enthralling prog-instrumental music with an incredible atmosphere. Another underground gem that cannot be missed! animamorte.com myspace.com/animamorte Physical needs: Transubstans records MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2 Scans Download

Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats - Blood Lust (2011)

Image
Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats is an unholy 3 piece from the UK. This one was requested quite alot in the comment boxes around here. Glad I picked it up recently. This is classic, 70s doom, lyrics about the occult, drugs and murder! Think Danav a meeting up with Electric Wizard. Highly recommended... myspace.com/uncleacid Vinyl available through Rise Above records Physical needs: uncleacid.bigcartel.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Drums Are for Parades - Master (2010)

Image
I'm glad to present you guys another underground gem from my own country, Belgium (always a rare opportunity). Drums Are For Parades is a band from Ghent, East Flanders. Think Baroness meeting up with The Melvins at a Masters Of Reality concert. This is not necessarily heavy music, but it packs a punch. This refreshing three-piece creates an instrumentally focused carnival of raw, unique, diverse & dirty rock. From sludge to stoner, alternative, experimental, orchestral & post-metal. Everyone should check this out asap! myspace.com/drumsareforparades  drumsareforparades.net MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2 Scans Download

Kings Destroy - And The Rest Will Surely Perish (2010)

Image
'Kings Destroy, NYC’s newest hybrid of Stoner Rock, Doom and Hardcore, unites musicians from many of the genres’ most prolific bands. Hailing from the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, KD features guitarists Carl Porcaro and Chris Skowronski from legendary, 100k album selling ‘Killing Time’, vocalist Steve Murphy from ‘Uppercut’, drummer Rob Sefcik formerly of ‘Mans Ruin’, ‘The Begotten’, ‘Uppercut’ and ‘Electric Frankenstein’ and bassist Ed Bocchino of ‘Stanley’ and ‘Uppercut’. The common bond? “An addiction to excessive volume, power and driving, distorted riffs” explains Porcaro. With influences ranging from Zeppelin and the Who to The Melvins, Yob and Cro Mags, KD describes their sound as “brutal Sabbath heaviness with hardcore outbursts and disturbed vocals verging on the demented.”' Solid & interesting doom metal from Brooklyn, NY. Kings Destroy is a band that blends many influences from the past & present. From the classic Sabbathian & Vitus grooves to the unho

Omega Massif - Karpatia (2011)

Image
Omega Massif has to be one of my favorite bands when it comes to instrumental /post-metal. These guys are masters in creating a unique, natural atmosphere through their instrumentals. Heavy as a mountain, while staying fresh & dramatic. This is a band that redefines the intelligent & instrumental sound of heaviness; It's massive, relentless & devastating. Breeding a vast, gloom-filled atmosphere. I think 'Karpatia' follows in the footsteps of it's predecessor and acts more as a direct sequel to Geisterstadt . This is the Omega Massif we know in it's purest & heaviest form. Another highly recommended release! omegamassif.de myspace.com/omegamassif Physical needs: Denovali Records MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Øresund Space Collective is 'a group of Danish, Swedish and American musicians that get together as often as possible for free form improvised cosmic music'. Call them the Earthless of Space Rock. These guys bring some wonderful & totally improvised instrumentals. 'Slip Into The Vortex' is a random pick out of Øresunds Space Collective's rather impressive library. Orchid - Capricorn (2011)

Image
‘Capricorn’ is a great album on which this band showcases their Black Sabbath-inspired sound in a beautiful way. Next to Sabbath you can hear some other influences from the 70s like Led Zeppelin, but what I feel is more important is the fact that Orchid isn’t trying to prove anything; they’re not pretending to be a band from the 70s. The production of this album simply is up-to-date and as far as I’m concerned this band is miles ahead of all those wannabe retro acts. Next to the musical aspect Orchid also delivers some stunning packaging. The artwork by singer and tattoo-artist Theo Mindell is great and it is all packaged in a sort of gatefold sleeve. There’s even an edition available in book form. Fans of 70s heavy rock and early doom metal in the vein of Black Sabbath and Pentagram should check out Orchid no matter what, this is pure class! - Lords Of Metal A little late on this classic, in case you missed it: get it! Essential for fans of 70's retro-doom, from Pentagr

Wiht - The Harrowing Of The North (2011)

Image
'Wiht' from Leeds, UK (you might remember these guys). The mighty 3 piece returns with their second offering; 'The Harrowing Of The North'. This album takes us on an epic journey through the green fields of 70's driven psychedelica, stoner rock & doom metal. The sound & overall atmosphere could be compared to the (earlier) works of Ancestors & Capricorns with an extra hint of post-metal (Pelican, Russian Circles, Neurosis,..). It's dynamic, refreshing, raw, beautiful & ugly. From the punishing stoner/doom riffs to the wet psychedelic vibes. This one has to be heard! Without a doubt amongst the best instrumental releases for 2011. Wiht has outdone itself with Harrowing Of The North, a potential underground classic in it's kind. Gets better after each listen... Amarok - Amarok (2011)

Image
Impressive 4 piece from California, bringing some excellent sludge/ doom. This one has all the basic ingredients: fat & heavy as fuck riffs, both huge/ razor filled vocals, sweet dynamic tempo changes, lengthy tracks.. A formula that works like a charm when done correctly. For Amarok, a rising band in the genre, their s/t debut is one that definitely succeeds. A massive release for lovers of slow, sludge infested doom. Think Pombagira, Clagg, Cough, Indian, Coffinworm, Unearthly Trance, Thou,.. myspace.com/amarokdoom Order/ download this album at Orca Wolf Records (Vinyl & CD). MP3@256Kbps Download or Download 2

Botulinus Toxic - Sandstorm Pleasure Overdrive (2011)

Image
Noisy psyched out desert grooves from Poland. Influenced by everything Kyuss, 5ive & Karma to Burn. This is Botulinus Toxic's debut full-length 'Sandstorm Pleasure Overdrive'. A warm & loud desert experiment. Hard to tell in which direction this band wants to take their actual sound, it's a blend of many things. A confusing, but unique flavor. Thou - Summit (2010)

Image
'Summit' is without a doubt their best album that Thou have put together so far. It is the product of captivating songwriting and amazing musicianship, and this album was made LOUD and I mean real LOUD. The production is one element that other bands need to check out and take some pointers. If you like your sludge to be more than just riffs being dragged through a swamp, this is an album you need to hear... - Doommantia.com Latest full-length, vinyl editions available on Southern Lord records. Thou - Peasant (2008)

Image
'Thou's Peasant does what any memorable sludge album should; it completely takes the air out of any room it's being played in and creates a heavy vortex, a pulverizing soundscape that suffocates listeners with slow, brutally constricting riffs and exploding percussion. But there's another, almost hidden layer of beauty in Peasant; Thou will casually throw in a wonderful guitar lead over the sludge that makes Peasant seem less threatening and it ultimately works in Thou's favor. As Thou pounds along at their unwavering, draining pace, there are little hints of beautiful guitar melodies that just peak their head out of the gallons of sludge and it really makes Peasant a complete listening experience.' - Full review Second full-length, released through Autopsy Kitchen records . Thou - Tyrant (2007)

Image
The colossal debut from New Orleans 'Thou'. This band approaches the genre with their own dark touch, to bring forth a unique mix of doom, sludge & drone. Still overlooked by many, their latest effort from 2010 entitled 'Summit' left quite a mark in the current sludge/ doom scene. From the early works to the new ones, adding this beast on the blog. Get a taste of it! Sharing some clean EAC rips from the full-lengths. Check out Thou's website (Historical Analysis) for other free & rare downloads. Felipe Arcazas - Yardang & Freedom (2011)

Image
Here are some amazing new tracks from solo artist 'Arcazas'. Call him the Brazilian brother of Brant Bjork, a desert worshipping music guru. I absolutely loved his previous EP 'Induction To The Subconscious', quality laid-back desert vibes you can't miss. Check out the original post here . Great to see this man is still producing some wonderful instrumental tunes.
