I'm excited to bring you guys another 'big' review here at Stonerobixxx. Sahara Surfers, one of the more recent bands out there in the magical world that is stoner rock brings us 'Sonar Pilot'. To dive right in; The intro grabs you immediately & takes the listener on a deadly, yet colourful trip of fuzz, psychedelic & stoner rock. Austria's Sahara Surfers are back with a vengeance: heavier riffs, dreamy energetic vocals, a more diverse take on the songwriting,.. All in a rock solid production. I think this is one of those underground bands that feels instantly 'fresh'. taking different influences & blending them in their own original form. With Sonar Pilot this formula expands even more. The vocals are more balanced this time & give the sound a whole new interesting dimension, or: how heavy fuzzed out riffs go hand in hand with tough but clean female vocals (take the track 'Ganjalf' as an example). Debut full-length by the French atmospheric/ post-metal band 'Year Of No Light'. I previously posted the band's latest record on here, which was an absolutely fantastic piece of sonic bliss. It's quite interesting to know how these guys sounded in '06 (before they focused on a completely instrumental sound). There is quite some evil sludge-esque power on here, from the riffs to the harsh vocal style. The sound of 'Nord' is filled with hate, but also with lots of atmosphere; A great & daring combination. Hailing from London, England. Dead Existence brings a mix of hardcore, stoner rock, doom, sludge & more. You might've heard these guys before on their split with Dopefight . There's alot of influence & variation in Dead Existence's sound, and especially on their second offering; 'Born Into The Planet's Scars'. I think this band could easily put out an album with 10-15 tracks on it, but they choose to compile their unholy, misathropic energy in 3 colossal tracks. The result is a tasty mixture of up-tempo, grooved out sludge/ hardcore combined with massive, pounding doom and somewhat atmospheric interludes to stitch the sonic violence together. This works well, and in a way it forces the band to be more creative with their songwriting to keep the tracks interesting. CRUSHING doom from Edinburgh, Scotland. It's been quite a while since I was this impressed by such a slow, pumeling piece of thick, droning doom. This band clearly knows what they are doing, and they're doing it damn good. 3 lengthy tracks with an utterly raw & sludged out tempo, turn to 11 to get maximum results. Think early Electric Wizard meeting up with Warhorse , and you get a monstrous record entitled 'The Trial Of Failure'. Grabbed this unholy little gem at the YOB/ Dark Castle/ Kongh tour (which was absolutely mind-blowning). 'Norska' is some really interesting & original DIY sludge from Willamette Valley, Oregon. A Great, massive & varied wall of sound. Anyone that loves filthy sludge & heavy riffs in a dark, evil atmosphere should give this a try. With Aaron Rieseberg (YOB) on bass. 'Norska formed in 2004. Their first wave of material was performed around the Northwest and recorded, but never released. Over the years they have seen a few line-up changes in the rhythm section, yet the core members of the band remain. Finally sharing this masterpiece on here. YOB, one of the most legendary bands in the underground genre that is stoner/ doom, returns in 2011 with 'Atma'. This is the band in it's most primal, raw form yet... From the production to the absolutely crushing tracks. This is huge, cosmic doom dragged through a vast wasteland. You won't find a calculated, clean or polished sound on here. It's evil, dark, sludgy, filthy, doomed & stoned beyond imagination. One of the best & most solid releases for 2011 and another classic in the YOB library. If you haven't already: get this! Warm psychedelic vibes from Winterthur, Switzerland. The band describes their music as 'Kosmickrock'. Viaticum creates a good balance between trippy instrumentals & intensive vocals, although it can be quite confusing where these guys want to take their overall sound (when the second track kicks in for example). A loose but interesting mix of space, psychedelic, kraut, prog, & psychedelic rock! 'At first we were but two guitarists playing some music in the cellar of an old house in Diessenhofen. After awhile we got to know a guy who soon joined us with his bass. In the summer of 2004 we met our first drummer on the banks of the river rhine. Now we could finally start as a band. With 'Macho Libre', Planet of Zeus takes their sound to the next level. It's refined with a dirty bottle of whiskey, a little more accessible and still rocks like hell.
