Italy's Black Rainbows have been around for a while now, their latest; Supermuthafuzzalicious!! is another solid release I sadly missed in 2011. This band started back in the day as a 'joke' to jam to some heavy desert grooves. They released 3 full-length albums so far, quite an achievement! Their 2007 debut (coming up next) was a mix of different styles in the stoner rock genre. From MC5, Blue Cheer & Black Sabbath to Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Nebula & Monster Magnet. Real tasty desert grooves to say the least... This fine album builds upon the earlier sound with a more mature & distinct touch. I've read some mixed reviews for this one, and I'm personally digging the sound on this one. I think this is currently one of Italy's finest offerings if your looking for hot, spacy stoner jams. "It is with sadness and a great sense of pride, that we have decided to call it a day. This is a completely amicable decision and has been made in the best interests of the band. It has come to a point where we are no longer able to progress and take the band further, we feel this band deserves more respect than just to fade away. This simply is an issue of lack of time and funds; two of the three of us now have families and time has become a lot more precious. To progress as a band we need to dedicate a certain ammount of time to write and record, let alone gigging and touring. This is why we have decided to call it a day at a point where we feel this is something to be proud of. "Atavist Of Mann" is the second album by Huata. This is one of those rare albums that grabs you immediately without mercy. Incredible sound, songwriting & atmosphere. Fits perfectly with the occult style of doom that these French guys produce so well. I hear a mix of Electric Wizard, Sons Of Otis, Ancestors, Cough,... Crushing doom from France. Huata has a dark, vintage vibe through their music (in the likes of Ramesses, Electric Wizard). Occult stoner/ doom at it's finest. Turn this one to 11 & take the trip... "The guitar sounds are thicker than molasses especially the bass which is one of the heaviest bass sounds i have heard this year. The riffs are all built around huge amounts of fuzz and distortion but its not all slow doom, some of this stuff simply shreds in a stoner doom kind of way. Apocalipsis is a real promising band from Mexico City. They play their own mixture of instrumental post, stoner & sludge metal; Think Pelican meeting up with UK's Capricorns. These guys deliver a really hard-hitting & believable sound from start to finish. Something I would expect from a decent post-metal label, but this one here is 100% DIY & free. Amazing tunes! Judgment Day is upon us! The second coming of holy basstastic riffage & random televangelist samples. Gotta love this trio from Cleveland, Ohio. Megachurch 2 is a fantastic follow-up to 2010's Megachurch . Currently one of the most fun & enjoyable underground bands out there in the genre. Formed back in 1999, Lord 13 keeps the mean spirit of rock music alive. Hailing from Athens, Greece, this is a band that brings us back to the glorious days of Monster Magnet & Orange Goblin. Dirty, manly stoner/ hard rock with a heavy, classic 70's vibe. Think Cowboys & Aliens, Honcho, Roadsaw,... The Devil Rides Out plays a fat, bluesy, motor-whiskey-fueled style of rock music. This is their debut full-length after releasing 3 EP's. Sit back & enjoy some good ol' filthy grooves with rough vocals, all in a nice, thick production. Nothing too groundbreaking, but who gives a damn when it rocks this hard? Three-piece sludge/ stoner jam band from Cookeville, Tennessee. These guys recently grabbed me with their music like no other, bummer I missed them earlier. Hellbender has a fantastic & original jammy sound going on. Think Earthless & Tia Carrera meeting up with Sleep in a heavy psychedelic package. Incredible what these guys pull off with different influences. Hellbender's jams are vast, varied & well written. Trust me: you'll get addicted in no time... Hesper Payne describes itself as a death doom band, hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne on the north-east coast of England. To label this band as stricktly "death/ doom" would be quite wrong & absolutely right at the same time. This is no Winter, Autopsy, Coffins, Hooded Menace,... but there are refined elements of death metal in here. I think Hesper Payne is an oddball creature amidst different genres of heavy music. These guys are the weird, slimy, Lovecraftian tale of doom, death, stoner, sludge & progressive metal. Behold their eccentric artwork & hear their filthy experimental style on their latest EP: The Strange Tale Of Samuel Gonzalez. This one grabbed me instantly after hearing it on Bandcamp. The first track sounds like a swampy bastard child of Baroness & Mastodon, followed by 'Ospreys Jar'. A dark, sludgy riff monster following in the footsteps of (early) Morbid Angel. 'Litany Of The Drowners' left me with a haunted feeling & ends

This one came highly recommended by some trusted blog fans. I've read about this band, saw their crazy artwork, but never took the time to actually check 'em out. Glad I finally did... Vibravoid is a true gem in the world of psychedelic/ space rock. Influenced by the classics (Hawkwind, early Pink Floyd) to create their own intergalactic sonic trips. In more recent times: put them next to bands like Farflung, Litmus, Øresund Space Collective & Astrosoniq. The somewhat missing album in the Hypnos 69 collection. When it comes to vintage psychedelic rock, this band is my absolute favorite from Belgium. In the early days, Hypnos 69 started with a unique brand of 60's/ 70's 'stoner'- hard rock that would slowly evolve to a more psychedelic & freeform style (I highly recommend ' Legacy ', their latest on Elektrohasch).
