Stunning old school death/ doom from San Francisco. Vastum is one of those hidden treasures in the overly broad metal genre as it is today. Here's an interesting 2-man doom band from the Netherlands. Formed by Ed Warby (Gorefest, Hail Of Bullets) with Rogga Johansson as second vocalist (Revolting, Paganizer, Demiurg). These 2 giants crawl from the old school pits of death metal to make some epic, thematic doom metal. The 11th Hour has a really smart & distinct sound going on. You get the dramatic and emotional vocals of Ed Warby, taking us back to early Candlemass & Solitude Aeturnus in combination with the absolutely evil growls of Rogga. Hesper Payne describes itself as a death doom band, hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne on the north-east coast of England. To label this band as stricktly "death/ doom" would be quite wrong & absolutely right at the same time. This is no Winter, Autopsy, Coffins, Hooded Menace,... but there are refined elements of death metal in here. I think Hesper Payne is an oddball creature amidst different genres of heavy music. These guys are the weird, slimy, Lovecraftian tale of doom, death, stoner, sludge & progressive metal. Behold their eccentric artwork & hear their filthy experimental style on their latest EP: The Strange Tale Of Samuel Gonzalez. This one grabbed me instantly after hearing it on Bandcamp. The first track sounds like a swampy bastard child of Baroness & Mastodon, followed by 'Ospreys Jar'. A dark, sludgy riff monster following in the footsteps of (early) Morbid Angel. 'Litany Of The Drowners' left me with a haunted feeling & ends ...

This is their debut full-length from 1992 after self-releasing 2 demo tapes. This is classic ten ton heavy death metal played at unholy slow tempos. In times where alot of metal bands are mindless copies of each other & aim for 'wider audiences', underground artists like Autopsy will show us the way without any bullshit. 'Decaying' is a young & promising two piece from Finland. This is their debut full-length, and it left a big impression on me & my neighbors.
