Review: Kong - Merchants Of Air (2012)

Image
Formed back in '88 & still going strong; KONG. With their experimental take on prog & spaced out rock/metal, this Amsterdam-based band has to be one of the most intense and challenging instrumental formations coming from the Netherlands. Their distinct sound is quite indescribable. But if you love a refreshing, intelligent & hard hitting musical journey, this one is for you. Think Monkey3 & Mother-Unit (ex 35007) & add a crazy unique industrial twist. Ever since picking up their previous album , Kong has always been one of my hidden favorites. Although this band made some wonderful albums in the past, I'm an absolute fan of their current, evolved sound. It's spacy, heavy, epic, refreshing, atmospheric & unique. This is the kind of instrumental music I adore. Overwhelming at first, but each listen comes with new discoveries. 2012's "Merchants Of Air" is a highly enjoyable trip in experimental & heavy instrumental music. Take this ...

Telestrion - Telestrion (2007)

Image
Telestrion from Atlanta, Georgia are a heavy psychedelic/ stoner rock 4-piece. They offer a solid retro sound influenced by bands like Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Masters Of Reality & Hawkwind. From the production to the song-writing & artwork, everything is top notch on this record. Think of Telestrion as the American answer to the Belgian Hypnos 69 . Overall this is a really nice 'n spacy album filled with blazing retro riffs & somewhat Ozzy-esque vocals. A great discovery for all to hear... telestrion.net myspace.com/Telestrion MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Papir - Papir (2010)

Papir is a young Danish band that brings us a fresh instrumental style of kraut, space & psychedelic rock. I recently got hooked to their magnificent sound. A handful of colourful textures, layers & dynamics flow through the 4 tracks on this album. For fans of Vibravoid, Sula Bassana, 35007, Gomer Pyle, Het Droste Effect, RMFTM, Secret Saucer... Enjoy & listen without distraction... Available on Vinyl (limited/ 250 copies) through Red Tape records . Vibravoid - Void Vibration (2002)

Image
This one came highly recommended by some trusted blog fans. I've read about this band, saw their crazy artwork, but never took the time to actually check 'em out. Glad I finally did... Vibravoid is a true gem in the world of psychedelic/ space rock. Influenced by the classics (Hawkwind, early Pink Floyd) to create their own intergalactic sonic trips. In more recent times: put them next to bands like Farflung, Litmus, Øresund Space Collective & Astrosoniq. Vibravoid should fill another black hole in your intergalactic music library... vibravoid.com Physical needs: Sulatron MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

EYE - Center Of The Sun (2011)

EYE is a distinct, spaced out rock trio from Columbus, Ohio. They play a weird, but oh so addictive style of dark, proggy psychedelic rock. Think Hawkwind & (early) Farflung. Titan, hailing from Brookly, New York. Litmus - Aurora (2009)

Image
Third & latest album, released on Rise Above records. 'The recently issued album Aurora is the best Hawkwind album since “Hall of the Mountain Grill” and should be considered a highpoint in the spacerock genre. Period. Right from the start Aurora is an uncomparable trip. The openingtrack ‘Beyond The Sun’ rages through the universe, no brakes whatsoever, driven by a rampaging mellotron and endlessly pounding riffs. When after almost twelve minutes the trip ends the listener is lost. What, quit so soon? We want more! The first two albums by Litmus, ‘You Are Here’ and ‘Planetfall’ were nice genrefillers. Nothing more, nothing less. But on ‘Aurora’ all the pieces of the puzzle fit. Hawkwind is back, albeit under the name Litmus and all pretenders are majestically swept aside. Let one thing be clear: these are the “Kings of Infinite Space”. Real fans have stopped reading now and embark on a spacewalk to the nearest recordshop in order to buy THE spacerock album of the y...

Litmus - Planetfall (2007)

Image
Second full-length, released through Rise Above (promo version)/ Candlelight records . 'First track “Destroy The Mothership” sums up the entire album perfectly. A wash of spacey synths attempts to swallow up driving guitars, drums, and neat-o melodic bass lines while blue-collar vocals yelp sci-fi infused lyrics above the din. Oh, and did I mention that it will flatten you? Exhilarating? Oh yes! It’s like they bottled the energy of early Motörhead (a really easy reference in a review that mentions Hawkwind , I know), mixed it up with some of the harder moments from Levitation, and injected a slightly prog-minded artiness into the rockin’.    And then, just when all of that has sunk in, “Tempest” kicks in and lays the previous track to waste, taking its best moments and amping everything up even further. In fact, that’s the trend that Litmus seems to fall into on Planetfall , as each full song (discounting the segues, of course) bests the o...

Litmus - You Are Here (2004)

Image
Litmus is a London-based space rock band formed in 2000. In terms of the blog: the perfect blend between the intergalactic instrumentals of bands like Secret Saucer & Oresund Space Collective and the furious space rockin' vibes of Farflung & Astrosoniq . Ofcourse, Hawkwind & Black Sabbath are the key influences here. Still, Litmus is quite unique in it's own way, creating spacy hard rock with an edge, a sharp edge. It's heavy, distorted, hypnotic, psychedelic, spaced out. Grab this, get in your mothership & turn it up... myspace.com/litmusspacerock Physical needs: Amazon MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Øresund Space Collective - Slip Into The Vortex (2010)

Øresund Space Collective is 'a group of Danish, Swedish and American musicians that get together as often as possible for free form improvised cosmic music'. Call them the Earthless of Space Rock. These guys bring some wonderful & totally improvised instrumentals. 'Slip Into The Vortex' is a random pick out of Øresunds Space Collective's rather impressive library. I advise everyone to check out the Bandcamp page below to further explore the galaxy of OSC! oresundspacecollective.bandcamp.com oresundspacecollective.com myspace.com/oresundspacecollective MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2 Scans Download

Radar Men From The Moon - Intergalactic Dada & Space Trombones (2011)

Image
'Radar Men From The Moon': an old scifi b-movie & a fresh space rock band from the Netherlands. I originally found this gem through a site called prog-sphere.com , they have an excellent selection of Bandcamp picks over there (from indie to space & stoner rock), check it out . With Radar Men From The Moon they had me on 'instrumental space/post/stoner rock'. Something that describes this Dutch band perfectly. We all know by now what to expect when it comes to the Netherlands & space rock (35007, Gomer Pyle, Het Droste Effect, Astrosoniq, Mother-Unit,..), these guys are no exception. Intergalactic Dada & Space Trombones is RMFTM's debut album & a highly impressive one in it's kind. A laid-back, fuzzy, warm, hypnotic & intergalactic trip, any fan of space/ psychedelic/ desert rock should give it a chance! I'm still surprised these guys are so hidden, decided to give their wonderful tunes some exposure on here (and special thanks to the...
