Aleph Null is a fresh stoner/ sludge three-piece from Germany. These guys combine pounding, monolithic riffs with vocals reminiscent to Southern & modern metal. A weird but daring combination that's hit & miss. The overall sound on this EP remains absolutely massive, one of the main reasons to pay attention to this beast. One of the earlier band request when this blog was still young. Gandhi's Gunn is an Italian four-piece, and they just released their second full-length; "The Longer The Beard The Harder The Sound". This is heavy straightforward stoner/ hard rock with an excessive amount of hair on it's back. Thick riffs, furious grooves, heavy vocals & some unexpected songwriting/ concepts ('flood' is a fine example). Not the best or most original sounds out there, but a solid album by a band that brings us back to the essence of heavy rock music. For fans of Mustasch, Nightstalker & Planet Of Zeus! Buried Sleeper is a rising young band hailing from the UK, "Colosseum" is the their debut full-length. This beast is filled with 7 tracks of thick, fuzzy doom drenched in cloudy psychedelica. I would say the sound on this thing is somewhere between (early) Torche & Sleep. It's damn heavy, colourful, sometimes energetic, and always high on monumental stoned riffage. Throughout the 53 minutes that is Colosseum, the band manages to create a highly listenable trip. A somewhat rare, mystical & sludgy experience. Surprisingly good album! About a month ago I posted Brujas del Sol's first release (HIGHLY recommended). Moonliner Vol. 2 continues where Vol. 1 left off. The first track introduces us to a more groovy, jammin' kinda sound with experimental vocals (think Samsara Blues Experiment). Turns out great, and it shows a band that knows exactly what it's doing. The second track, "Baba Yaga" takes us on a psychedelic surfin' desert boogie, more in the tradition of their original instrumental sound. Kinda sounds like Fatso Jetson when played in a Tarantino movie. Yep, this is another fantastic little EP coming from an amazing free form psychedelic/ desert rock trio. Iron Mtn is a Los Angeles based stoner/ doom/ experimental 4-piece. They play raw instrumental grooves that will get you moving... Iron Mtn's sound is heavy & bluesy psychedelic at the same time. These guys throw out some crushing riffs while staying really dynamic in their own distinct way. For example; The opening track could be a lost demo of Samsara Blues Experiment & the second track creates a dark, moody atmosphere in the likes of Capricorns, Serpentcult, Sardonis,... followed by a slow Sleep worshipping groove. Their s/t debut is a great offering for any lover of instrumental stoner/ doom with raw edges. The hints of psychedelica & bluesy riffs are a welcome addition that keep the sound interesting & balanced throughout the 5 tracks. Brujas del Sol is an instrumental 3-piece from Colombus, Ohio.They make "music that makes people dance, bang their heads and plug their ears". Moonliner Vol. 1 is the first installment of 3 volumes that we'll get to hear in the next few months. This band plays absolutely stunning psychedelic/ desert rock filled with atmosphere & hypnotic grooves. A genre that's absolutely loved around here (think Causa Sui, 35007, Ten East, Yawning Man, Wooden Shjips,...). I have no doubt that Moonliner will be amongst my favorite discoveries this year, can't wait to hear the other volumes. 30,000 Monkies is a 4-piece from Belgium. They play a unique style of stoner/ noise/ doom & heavy riff-oriented rock music. Inspired by bands like The Melvins, Sonic Youth & Kyuss. "Womb Eater Wife Beater" takes us on a weird, experimental trip filled with evil riffs & psychotic thrills. I just love the atmosphere on this EP; It sounds fresh, heavy & evil while staying true to a distinct & original image. I'm thinking in the line of recent underground DIY artists like Megachurch or The Christpunchers . Bands that are able to create their own sound while leaving room to the imagination of the listener (with the help of conceptual touches for example). 30,000 Monkies definitely conquered a special place in my messed up musical brain. Hollow mirrors is a fresh band from San Francisco, CA. Their s/t debut is a mix of warm psychedelic, kraut & prog rock. With this album, these guys created one of the most enjoyable, laid-back psychedelic experiences I heard in a long time. "Hollow Mirrors" is somewhat split in 2 coherent parts. Venomous Maximus is a fresh band hailing from Houston, TX. They play a distinct style of retro 70's fueled stoner rock & doom metal. Their grooves are just too doomy for the sound of stoner rock (and the other way around), I would leave them somewhere in the middle. "The Mission" is the band's dedut EP on Cutthroat Records , after previously releasing a 7'' single. The vinyl version comes with 4 tracks that cry to be played on an old, dusty turntable. To describe the overall sound; somewhere between the lo-fi crackling production of Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats and the old school grooves of The Sword & Black Pyramid. The Devil Rides Out plays a fat, bluesy, motor-whiskey-fueled style of rock music. This is their debut full-length after releasing 3 EP's. Sit back & enjoy some good ol' filthy grooves with rough vocals, all in a nice, thick production. Nothing too groundbreaking, but who gives a damn when it rocks this hard?
