Owl - Owl EP (2012)

Image
Owl is a fresh retro band hailing from Oakland, San Fransico. With a sound rooted in classic 70's heavy metal & rock, these guys pull of some impressive vintage vibes. This is the band's second release (after a dusty demo tape ), a two song 7'' featuring "Stone Loner" and "Feaster From The Stars". For fans of Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy & and everything in between. Try it! owlbrotherhood.net owlbrotherhood.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Serpent Throne - White Summer - Black Winter (2010)

Image
'The musical discovery of this month for me is Serpent Throne from Philly. I didn’t know this band before but ‘White Summer – Black Winter’ is the third album of this instrumental band. These four guys play classic rock 70s style. You can hear influences of bands like Led Zeppelin, Wishbone Ash, Scorpions, UFO, Thin Lizzy and so on and that without any vocals. As far as contemporary bands are concerned a band like Valkyrie is comparable, also a band that I really like. So, this band made the choice to keep their songs instrumental but I have to admit that I miss vocal parts here and there. Here and there I started to make up my own vocal lines while listening to the album. Keeping that in mind my thoughts are a bit divided; on one side you miss vocals but on the other hand I was sucked into the music while thinking actively about possible vocal parts. An exceptional experience if I may add. Devotees of classic hardrock with great guitar parts should definitely check ou...

Mountain Witch - Mountain Witch (2011)

Image
So much for resolutions: After their now sold-out debut LP “Scythe & Dead Horse”, Hamburg-based threepiece Mountain Witch had originally intended to increase the share of vocals in their hallucinatory blend of doom, drone, stoner-rock and psychedelia. And yet, their self-titled second 12inch now sees them moving even deeper into the fields of instrumental riff-mantras, foresaking lyrics altogether on this occasion. As a result, „Mountain Witch“, despite its moderate length, has turned into an even trippier journey than its predecessor, carving out the band's sound with yet more precision. It is telling that the formation are not releasing with a pure metal-label, but Droehnhaus, an eclectic outfit whose output has ranged from autechre-style electronica to psychedelic rock. After all, fusing electronically manipulated effect layers with full-force band-sequences has remained a defining trait of the trio to this day: On stand-out track „Severance“, for example, the monolithic pow...

Stoned Jezus - Stormy Monday (2011)

Image
Excellent 70's fueled stoner/ doom from Ukraine. Somewhere between the occult psychedelic vibes of Black Sabbath & the stoned, monumental riffs of Sleep. I really loved ' First Communion ', their previous effort. This EP is a good, solid progression. Evil & tasty! myspace.com/stonedjesusmusic stonedjesus.bandcamp.com Get their stuff through All That Is Heavy / Solitude Productions . MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

The Heavy Eyes - 1 (2010)

Image
Lots of request coming from Bandcamp in the last month. I highly recommend anyone to check out this magical place to satisfy ears & mind. Posting some enjoyable ones for the weekend, starting with 'The Heavy Eyes' from Memphis, Tennessee. This is their debut EP from last year. Bluesy 70's approved grooves! 'This is a very ROUGH ep that was recoded on a TASCAM recorder in a non soundproofed room. It was recoded track by track with no metronome and can be off-time at times. The album is meant to give the listener an idea of our sound. Better recordings will be released in the near future, until then enjoy the rough ep. Could we possibly emphasize rough any further?' theheavyeyesmemphis.bandcamp.com myspace.com/theheavyeyes MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Slow Ride Home - The Great Southern Supercluster (2010)

Image
'Formed in December 2007, after recording a EP in 2008 the band had a long break before returning in 2009 with one new band member and a renewed energy. In 2010 they recorded another EP with the great title "The Great Southern Supercluster". The current line-up consists of Sasha — guitar, vocals, Valera — guitar, Dima — bass and Lucy — drums. Currently the band remains unsigned but its only a matter of time before a label picks them up because this is a very good band and this is an outstanding 25 minutes of Rock that blends Psychedelia, Blues-Rock jammy passages and an distinct mid-90's Desert Rock vibe (Brant Bjork needs to hear this!).' -full review at Doommantia.com Exciting instrumental band from Ukraine. 'The Great Southern Supercluster' offers 4 tracks of 70's worshipping, heavy psychedelic desert jams. Hard to say anything bad about this. Loving every minute of it, one of those bands that could stay a long time on repeat (also see Sams...

El Hijo De La Aurora - Lemuria (2009)

Image
And another great one from Peru. Formed in 2008 by by Joaquín Cuadra (Don Juan Matus). Released through the same label ( Espiritus Inmundos ). Something surprising happens about seven minutes into Peruvian trio El Hijo de la Aurora’s debut CD, Lemuria (Ogro Records). What’s so far been a straightforward and admittedly terrifyingly desolate drone record takes a turn and a pure stoner rock riff is injected into the 11-minute opening title track. All of a sudden El Hijo de la Aurora – a trio with no fewer than eight guests / collaborators on the album – are like SunnO))) with payoff, and as the record plays out is near 40-minute runtime (it feels shorter), that’s only the beginning of the sonic twists the band has on offer. - The Obelisk / Roadburn.com , album of the day myspace.com/elhijodelaaurora MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Don Juan Matus - Visiones Paganas (2008)

Classic 70's oriented rock collective from Peru. Hard to define this band when it comes to their sound, a somewhat mixed, original approach to a familiar genre. Lots of variation & influences! Black Bombaim - Saturdays And Space Travels (2010)

Thanks to Tojo for sending this one. His band plays some really great psychedelic rock. 'Think Sabbath meets Earthless, with an African touch, people say'. Firebird - Firebird (2000)

Image
British Blues/ stoner rock formed in '99 by Bill Steer ( Carcass , Napalm Death ), heavy 70's influence. Currently signed to Rise Above records. 'Firebird came together in 1999 when Steer teamed up with Cathedral bassist Leo Smee and Spiritual Beggars drummer Ludwig Witt. Both bassist and drummer departed due to commitments with their primary bands before a 2001 European tour that saw Steer teaming up with Blind Dog bassist Tobias Nilsson and Quill drummer George Atlagic. In 2002 Steer announced yet another line-up consisting of drummer Atlagic and Quill and Spiritual Beggars bassist Roger Nilsson. This line-up recorded 2003's No. 3. Since then many line-up changes occurred but significantly Steer reunited with Witt on 2006's Hot Wings and have remained the core of the line up ever since.' - Wiki myspace.com/firebirdblues myspace.com/firebirdpage (old page) MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2 Scans Download
