Mountain Witch - Mountain Witch (2011)
So much for resolutions: After their now sold-out debut LP “Scythe & Dead Horse”, Hamburg-based threepiece Mountain Witch had originally intended to increase the share of vocals in their hallucinatory blend of doom, drone, stoner-rock and psychedelia. And yet, their self-titled second 12inch now sees them moving even deeper into the fields of instrumental riff-mantras, foresaking lyrics altogether on this occasion. As a result, „Mountain Witch“, despite its moderate length, has turned into an even trippier journey than its predecessor, carving out the band's sound with yet more precision.
It is telling that the formation are not releasing with a pure metal-label, but Droehnhaus, an eclectic outfit whose output has ranged from autechre-style electronica to psychedelic rock. After all, fusing electronically manipulated effect layers with full-force band-sequences has remained a defining trait of the trio to this day: On stand-out track „Severance“, for example, the monolithic power of Sitte's sluggish riff is gradually superimposed by hallucinatory swirling nebulas of humming noise and both the intro and outro of the LP are atmospheric compositions adding to the overall experience of the album. -myspace.com/mountainwitch
Some serious old school occult 70's grooves. I absolutely love the atmosphere on this one. This is dusty stoner/ doom found in the cellar of some unholy haunted house! For fans of Serpent Throne & Witch. 200 copies black vinyl/ 100 copies clear vinyl.
