Aleph Null is a fresh stoner/ sludge three-piece from Germany. These guys combine pounding, monolithic riffs with vocals reminiscent to Southern & modern metal. A weird but daring combination that's hit & miss. The overall sound on this EP remains absolutely massive, one of the main reasons to pay attention to this beast. Formed in the summer of 2009, this young band from Portland, Oregon brings us an interesting form of dark, psychedelic doom. Uzala creates a thick wall of haunting, eerie & highly atmospheric sludge/ doom. Following in the footsteps of Cough, Windhand, Acid King & Jex Toth. Brighton's Dopefight was amongst my favorite newcomers back in 2010 . I patiently waited to inject my subwoofer once again with those angry weedian grooves, mountainous riffs & sludgy breakdowns. Dopefight returns together with London's Gurt on this mighty split, featuring 2 brand new tracks from each band. I'm not really familiar with Gurt, but after hearing "Dudes with Beards with Cats" I was kinda sold to their swinging crusty, old school sludge sound (+1 for the hilarious promo clip). American Witch is a fresh band from California, following in the footsteps of Pantera, COC, Down & Crowbar. I'm usually not too fond of this type of music (read: Southern/ groove metal) but I think American Witch delivers some really good tracks on this promo. "Dirt" has to be my favorite. From the songwriting to the crunchy production, everything is really polished & heavy as a brick. Apocalipsis is a real promising band from Mexico City. They play their own mixture of instrumental post, stoner & sludge metal; Think Pelican meeting up with UK's Capricorns. These guys deliver a really hard-hitting & believable sound from start to finish. Something I would expect from a decent post-metal label, but this one here is 100% DIY & free. Amazing tunes! Three-piece sludge/ stoner jam band from Cookeville, Tennessee. These guys recently grabbed me with their music like no other, bummer I missed them earlier. Hellbender has a fantastic & original jammy sound going on. Think Earthless & Tia Carrera meeting up with Sleep in a heavy psychedelic package. Incredible what these guys pull off with different influences. Hellbender's jams are vast, varied & well written. Trust me: you'll get addicted in no time... Hesper Payne describes itself as a death doom band, hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne on the north-east coast of England. To label this band as stricktly "death/ doom" would be quite wrong & absolutely right at the same time. This is no Winter, Autopsy, Coffins, Hooded Menace,... but there are refined elements of death metal in here. I think Hesper Payne is an oddball creature amidst different genres of heavy music. These guys are the weird, slimy, Lovecraftian tale of doom, death, stoner, sludge & progressive metal. Behold their eccentric artwork & hear their filthy experimental style on their latest EP: The Strange Tale Of Samuel Gonzalez. This one grabbed me instantly after hearing it on Bandcamp. The first track sounds like a swampy bastard child of Baroness & Mastodon, followed by 'Ospreys Jar'. A dark, sludgy riff monster following in the footsteps of (early) Morbid Angel. "Stone Angels", hailing from the ruins of Christchurch, New Zealand. This band plays a blackened style of haunting sludge metal. Influenced by all corners in the genre; From the classics like Eyehategod & Electric Wizard to the distinct & hateful sounds of 16, Iron Monkey & the more recent Cough. Nothing too original, but great nonetheless. The overall sound on here has a really "doomed" feel too it in combination with a more death/ growlish approach to the vocals (read: not your average sludge screaming). Gave this one a few spins and it kept me coming back for more. Within The Witch is a great start from yet another fresh band in the genre, check it out! Chicago's "Indian", one of my early addictions to doomy sludge metal. The Unquiet Sky blew my mind in the past with an utterly heavy, raw & destructive sound. This band was quite unique back in the day & it lived on, deeply underground. This year the almighty Relapse Records picked these guys up with "Guiltless", Indian's fourth album. This Finnish 4-piece left quite an impression with their debut EP in 2010. DDJ returns with 'The Descent', an hour long journey into the filthy psychedelic swamps of stoner/ sludge. This is a band filled with surprises and a sound that goes above the usual standards of the genre. Imagine the chainsaw guitars of early 90's death metal (Entombed, Dismember) played with the slow, fierce hatred of sludge (Iron Monkey, Eyehategod) into a sea of gloomy 70's psychedelica. It may sound weird, but it definitely works on here. I absolutely love this kind of "experimental" sound that goes in all directions while staying surprisingly familiar.
