Goddess is a one-man band from Bucharest, Romania. Ervin Usein, the man behind this project (from the instruments to the artwork) creates an absolutely stunning musical experience. A journey filled with spaced out stoner jams & proggy vibes. Amongs the 5 tracks this album has to offer, "Astral Highway" & "Blood and Fire" became instant favorites for 2012. This album is indeed, one hell of a discovery. I just love the ballsy prog-psychedelic sound on this thing. Formed in the summer of 2009, this young band from Portland, Oregon brings us an interesting form of dark, psychedelic doom. Uzala creates a thick wall of haunting, eerie & highly atmospheric sludge/ doom. Following in the footsteps of Cough, Windhand, Acid King & Jex Toth. A highly immersive and interesting take on the genre, filled with various influences. Get this! California's Snail formed in '92, one of those small but legendary underground bands in the early stoner/ doom scene. You should all remember their comeback album "Blood" (released after a hiatus of 15 years). The opener on that thing has some of the most utterly heavy and memorable riffs known to man. A personal favorite. Terminus is Snail's third full-length, a monster that came outta nowhere. Found it on coincidence through Bandcamp, streamed it, loved it. Terminus is filled with ten ton riffs, originality, a good 70's vibe & hints of psychedelica. A heavy, stoned piece of sonic bliss. Buried Sleeper is a rising young band hailing from the UK, "Colosseum" is the their debut full-length. This beast is filled with 7 tracks of thick, fuzzy doom drenched in cloudy psychedelica. I would say the sound on this thing is somewhere between (early) Torche & Sleep. It's damn heavy, colourful, sometimes energetic, and always high on monumental stoned riffage. Throughout the 53 minutes that is Colosseum, the band manages to create a highly listenable trip. A somewhat rare, mystical & sludgy experience. Surprisingly good album! Richmond's Windhand really impressed me back in 2010 with their Practice Space Demo . It had that doomy, fuzzed out vintage sound with hints of psychedelica & spot on female vocals. Hellbender has a fantastic & original jammy sound going on. Think Earthless & Tia Carrera meeting up with Sleep in a heavy psychedelic package. Experimental psyched-out jams from Milan, Italy. Some great, pure & raw music that doesn't take itself too seriously. Gotta love it... “Alice In Stonerland” has been recorded live, as usual, as we believe this is the only way to capture the rawness and liveliness of the rituals held in honour of the King Bong. We also decided to experiment a bit. For the first time, under the guide of the beast, we entered the studio with our minds completely free. Nothing had been written or rehearsed, we just pressed the REC button and let the music flow. The result is 34 minutes of improvised music; you may find the audio quality isn't the clearest, but it's free, so don't complain. This Finnish 4-piece left quite an impression with their debut EP in 2010. DDJ returns with 'The Descent', an hour long journey into the filthy psychedelic swamps of stoner/ sludge. This is a band filled with surprises and a sound that goes above the usual standards of the genre. Imagine the chainsaw guitars of early 90's death metal (Entombed, Dismember) played with the slow, fierce hatred of sludge (Iron Monkey, Eyehategod) into a sea of gloomy 70's psychedelica. It may sound weird, but it definitely works on here. I absolutely love this kind of "experimental" sound that goes in all directions while staying surprisingly familiar. 'Wiht' from Leeds, UK (you might remember these guys). The mighty 3 piece returns with their second offering; 'The Harrowing Of The North'. This album takes us on an epic journey through the green fields of 70's driven psychedelica, stoner rock & doom metal. The sound & overall atmosphere could be compared to the (earlier) works of Ancestors & Capricorns with an extra hint of post-metal (Pelican, Russian Circles, Neurosis,..). It's dynamic, refreshing, raw, beautiful & ugly. From the punishing stoner/doom riffs to the wet psychedelic vibes. This one has to be heard! 'Hydromedusa' from Adelaide, Australia. Huge, aggressive stoner/ doom (or anything close to that). This album starts with a quick groove followed by 'Pemulwuy', a sexy 24 minute stoner/ doom epic (check out the vid below). I hear some colossal Sleep, Southern Eyehategod filth, crushing Solace grooves & even some angry Clutch funkyness on here. Hydromedusa uses their influences to craft something dynamic & distinct. This beast is huge, dirty & energetic. To the point: this album destroys & Hydromedusa is another rare band that needs to be heard.
