Formed back in '88 & still going strong; KONG. With their experimental take on prog & spaced out rock/metal, this Amsterdam-based band has to be one of the most intense and challenging instrumental formations coming from the Netherlands. Their distinct sound is quite indescribable. But if you love a refreshing, intelligent & hard hitting musical journey, this one is for you. Think Monkey3 & Mother-Unit (ex 35007) & add a crazy unique industrial twist. Ever since picking up their previous album , Kong has always been one of my hidden favorites. Although this band made some wonderful albums in the past, I'm an absolute fan of their current, evolved sound. It's spacy, heavy, epic, refreshing, atmospheric & unique. Hailing from L'Aquila, Italy, This fairly unknown band brings us a heavy dose of hot psychedelic vibes. The Whirlings made quite a noticeable appearance on the latest " Desert Sound " compilation, bringing together Italy's finest stoner/ fuzz & psychedelic sounds. The Whirlings s/t EP was released in 2011, and is currently available through Ozium Records. From start to finish, this album is a hidden classic for any fan of instrumental, psyched out desert rock. Don't you just love it when a band completely surprises you with the tunes you crave for? Canada's Dead Branches is a perfect example. Looking at the front cover, one could expect some generic post-rock, but no. Behind that gloomy forest lies an assault of heavy riffage, masterful songwriting & kick ass grooves. Goddess is a one-man band from Bucharest, Romania. Ervin Usein, the man behind this project (from the instruments to the artwork) creates an absolutely stunning musical experience. A journey filled with spaced out stoner jams & proggy vibes. Amongs the 5 tracks this album has to offer, "Astral Highway" & "Blood and Fire" became instant favorites for 2012. This album is indeed, one hell of a discovery. I just love the ballsy prog-psychedelic sound on this thing. Poland's Major Kong, an underground favorite back in 2011 . The band has returned from it's muddy swamps to release "Doom For The Black Sun". 45 lingering minutes filled with psychedelic doom jams. The sound on this thing is raw, heavy & really "pure", it's like these guys are playing a live jam session right in front of you. Major Kong brings their style in the most natural form possible & succeeds with this album. With a bandname like "Maria Isn't A Virgin Anymore" you'll definitely catch the listener's attention (for the fans: MIAVA). But is there more to find after such a corny name? Absolutely. This surprisingly young Belgian four piece mixes post-metal with rifftastic stoner jams. Iron Mtn is a Los Angeles based stoner/ doom/ experimental 4-piece. They play raw instrumental grooves that will get you moving... Iron Mtn's sound is heavy & bluesy psychedelic at the same time. These guys throw out some crushing riffs while staying really dynamic in their own distinct way. For example; The opening track could be a lost demo of Samsara Blues Experiment & the second track creates a dark, moody atmosphere in the likes of Capricorns, Serpentcult, Sardonis,... followed by a slow Sleep worshipping groove. Their s/t debut is a great offering for any lover of instrumental stoner/ doom with raw edges. The hints of psychedelica & bluesy riffs are a welcome addition that keep the sound interesting & balanced throughout the 5 tracks. Brujas del Sol is an instrumental 3-piece from Colombus, Ohio.They make "music that makes people dance, bang their heads and plug their ears". Moonliner Vol. 1 is the first installment of 3 volumes that we'll get to hear in the next few months. This band plays absolutely stunning psychedelic/ desert rock filled with atmosphere & hypnotic grooves. A genre that's absolutely loved around here (think Causa Sui, 35007, Ten East, Yawning Man, Wooden Shjips,...). I have no doubt that Moonliner will be amongst my favorite discoveries this year, can't wait to hear the other volumes. Apocalipsis is a real promising band from Mexico City. They play their own mixture of instrumental post, stoner & sludge metal; Think Pelican meeting up with UK's Capricorns. These guys deliver a really hard-hitting & believable sound from start to finish. Something I would expect from a decent post-metal label, but this one here is 100% DIY & free. Amazing tunes! Gotta love it... “Alice In Stonerland” has been recorded live, as usual, as we believe this is the only way to capture the rawness and liveliness of the rituals held in honour of the King Bong. We also decided to experiment a bit. For the first time, under the guide of the beast, we entered the studio with our minds completely free. Nothing had been written or rehearsed, we just pressed the REC button and let the music flow. The result is 34 minutes of improvised music; you may find the audio quality isn't the clearest, but it's free, so don't complain. Finally got my hands on some older, high quality Tia Carrera releases. Time to give these guys more exposure on here. Tia Carrera is a 3-piece jam band from Austin, Texas. They (mostly) play improvised tunes, following in the footsteps of old legends like Cream, Blue Cheer & Jimi Hendrix. This is bluesy, psychedelic "stoner rock" in it's most raw & purest form.
