Riff Cannon - Mercury Mountain (2009)

Image
Been hearing lots of sweet releases in the last couple of weeks, "Phoenix", by the Boston based band "Summoner" quickly became one of the top favorites. Check 'em out here . More on that soon... So here's "Riff Cannon", The same guys behind Summoner under a different name back in '09. In case you missed it; They released one full-length album, and it's one of the most amazing trippy psychedelic/ stoner riff rock combinations out there. The CD version of this feisty gem is quite hard to find these days, here's a proper rip for your listening pleasure. Check it out! Owl - Owl EP (2012)

Image
Owl is a fresh retro band hailing from Oakland, San Fransico. With a sound rooted in classic 70's heavy metal & rock, these guys pull of some impressive vintage vibes. This is the band's second release (after a dusty demo tape ), a two song 7'' featuring "Stone Loner" and "Feaster From The Stars". For fans of Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy & and everything in between. Try it! owlbrotherhood.net owlbrotherhood.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Samsung GALAXY S III

Image
Throughout the eighteen-month design phase, Samsung implemented stringent security measures and design procedures to maintain secrecy of the eventual design until its launch. Designers worked on three prototypes concurrently while treating each of them as the final product. This required the duplication of effort as they had to "repeat the same process for all three types."[21][22] The prototypes, photos of which were forbidden, were locked in a separate lab accessible only by core designers, and the task of transporting them was performed by the company's employees.[23][22] Despite such security measures, specifications of one of the three units were leaked, although it differs from the eventual design.[24]

Review: Kong - Merchants Of Air (2012)

Image
Formed back in '88 & still going strong; KONG. With their experimental take on prog & spaced out rock/metal, this Amsterdam-based band has to be one of the most intense and challenging instrumental formations coming from the Netherlands. Their distinct sound is quite indescribable. But if you love a refreshing, intelligent & hard hitting musical journey, this one is for you. Think Monkey3 & Mother-Unit (ex 35007) & add a crazy unique industrial twist. Ever since picking up their previous album , Kong has always been one of my hidden favorites. Although this band made some wonderful albums in the past, I'm an absolute fan of their current, evolved sound. It's spacy, heavy, epic, refreshing, atmospheric & unique. This is the kind of instrumental music I adore. Overwhelming at first, but each listen comes with new discoveries. 2012's "Merchants Of Air" is a highly enjoyable trip in experimental & heavy instrumental music. Take this

Aleph Null - Dale EP (2012)

Image
Aleph Null is a fresh stoner/ sludge three-piece from Germany. These guys combine pounding, monolithic riffs with vocals reminiscent to Southern & modern metal. A weird but daring combination that's hit & miss. The overall sound on this EP remains absolutely massive, one of the main reasons to pay attention to this beast. Who doesn't love a heavy dose of sludged out riffage? "Dale" is a crushingly heavy EP by a band that isn't afraid of seeing things differently. Try it! alephnull.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Viaje A 800 - Coñac Oxigenado (2012)

Image
Viaje A 800, one of the finest bands in the Spanish stoner/ psych scene, just released a new album. Quite the surprise! This unique four-piece creates a really dark, moody journey in heavy riffs & psychedelic groove. One of those hidden favorites that regularly gets a spin around here. "Coñac Oxigenado" is Viaje A 800's third full-length after 5 years. An album that grows with each listen and probably their best work yet... Available on CD/ LP, check it out & support these guys. The Whirlings - The Whirlings (2011)

Image
Hailing from L'Aquila, Italy, This fairly unknown band brings us a heavy dose of hot psychedelic vibes. The Whirlings made quite a noticeable appearance on the latest " Desert Sound " compilation, bringing together Italy's finest stoner/ fuzz & psychedelic sounds. The Whirlings s/t EP was released in 2011, and is currently available through Ozium Records. From start to finish, this album is a hidden classic for any fan of instrumental, psyched out desert rock. One of those bands that gets you instantly hooked with a flow of hypnotic, laid-back groovyness. Think The Machine, Causa Sui, Samsara Blues Experiment & Tia Carrera. Not to be missed! thewhirlings1.bandcamp.com Physical needs: Ozium Records MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Lord Of Doubts/ Ice Dragon Vinyl

Yama - Seaquake (2012)

Image
Here's a quick heads up for Yama's official demo/ EP release through Mind Flare Media. Kind of a repost , but this awesome band deserves it. And if you haven't heard of Yama, here's your chance! This young band from Utrecht (that's the fourth largest city of the Netherlands) brings us some sweet psychedelic riff candy. Somewhat in the same direction of Dutch brethren 7Zuma7, Gomer Pyle, 35007 & Astrosoniq. Yama creates their own raw & unique stoner/ hard rock jams with a good dose of hazy psychedelica. Dead Branches - 3 Track Promo (2012)

Image
Don't you just love it when a band completely surprises you with the tunes you crave for? Canada's Dead Branches is a perfect example. Looking at the front cover, one could expect some generic post-rock, but no. Behind that gloomy forest lies an assault of heavy riffage, masterful songwriting & kick ass grooves. Imagine Baroness's first EP, add some Karma To Burn & Pelican, and there you have it. Dead Branches is a 2-man instrumental project by members of Sorceress . This is a compilation of their 3 tracks found through Bandcamp. Highly recommended! deadbranches.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Trippy Wicked & The Cosmic Children Of The Knight - Going Home (2012)

Image
"Trippy Wicked & The Cosmic Children Of The Knight", one of the first band requests for this blog back in '09 . One hell of a band that plays some crazy fuzzed out stoner vibes. Trippy Wicked returns in 2012 with "Going Home", their second full-length. This has to be one of the most funky stoner rock/ metal album I laid my ears on this year. It's furious, energetic, refreshing & filled with incredible warm grooves. Review: Odyssey - Abysmal Despair (2012)

Image
Sweden's "Odyssey" is quite hard to describe, their approach is straightforward while staying experimental in the rocks-like-hell department. Imagine Nick Oliveri's Mondo Generator with a more raw, sludgier & overall heavier sound, in the likes of early Melvins maybe. Here's a band that's definitely not afraid to break barriers & try something else for a change. "Abysmal Despair" is Odyssey's debut full-length released through Transubstans Records . One of the more memorable tracks on this thing has to be " Wicked Witch " (known from the 7'' split with the revamped Black Pyramid), a rifftastic sludgy stoner rock anthem. Others are somewhat hit & miss, but there's plenty to explore. Love it or hate it, this is a pounding lesson in stoner, sludge, noise & garage rock with some really rough edges. Odyssey is Swedish greatness and they delivered a good, fun album for those who like their stoner rock different &a

Het Droste Effect - Lingerland (2012)

Image
Het Droste Effect, one of my favorite newcomers back in 2011. This relatively young band creates one of the most unique psychedelic experiences out there by mixing prog/ space/ stoner/ psych & fuzz rock into one tasty cosmic mass. A distinct sound, reminiscent to the wonderful Dutch scene in this particular genre (bands like 35007, Gomer Pyle, 7Zuma7, Hypnos69, Sungrazer...). "Lingerland" is the band's second EP & continues the sound that was originated on Het Droste Effect's self-titled . It's a little more experimental this time, filled with some nice surprises. Here's another crazy psyched out gem to add to your collection! hetdrosteeffect.bandcamp.com hetdrosteeffect.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Goddess - Discovery (2012)

Image
Goddess is a one-man band from Bucharest, Romania. Ervin Usein, the man behind this project (from the instruments to the artwork) creates an absolutely stunning musical experience. A journey filled with spaced out stoner jams & proggy vibes. Amongs the 5 tracks this album has to offer, "Astral Highway" & "Blood and Fire" became instant favorites for 2012. This album is indeed, one hell of a discovery. I just love the ballsy prog-psychedelic sound on this thing. Usein creates this laid-back, intergalactic atmosphere while staying heavy on the riffs & groove. Almost like Karma To Burn teamed up with Farflung (how crazy that may sound). This is one tasty instrumental album that comes highly recommended... goddessrocks.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Uzala - Uzala (2012)

Image
Formed in the summer of 2009, this young band from Portland, Oregon brings us an interesting form of dark, psychedelic doom. Uzala creates a thick wall of haunting, eerie & highly atmospheric sludge/ doom. Following in the footsteps of Cough, Windhand, Acid King & Jex Toth. A highly immersive and interesting take on the genre, filled with various influences. Get this! Much like Jex Thoth, Witch Mountain, Sabbath Assembly or Windhand, Uzala's doom takes advantage of soaring and sorrowful female vocals to reach back to doom metal's roots in the blues. While guitarist/vocalist Darcy Nutt's haunting vocals and melodicism are compelling enough to keep Uzala's new-vintage sound interesting, the band throws a wrench into the preceedings by counter-balancing those vocals with the death-grunts of guitarist Chad Remains. Simple yet well-executed songwriting and riffs keep the band's debut in a fresh Sabbath-ian light, never retreading well-travelled paths or falling i

Devil - Time To Repent (2011)

Image
Hailing from Norway, "Devil" plays dusty, vintage heavy/ doom metal, following in the footsteps of Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Witchfinder General,... This is a fresh band playing the old school vibes like we love 'em. Filled with driving riffs, cheesy lyrics, catchy hooks & a warm 70's sound. What's not to love? Mississipi Bones - Tracks (2012)

Image
Another oldie here at Stonerobixxx, Ohio's Mississippi Bones. "With the release of their follow up, “Tracks,” Mississippi Bones once again take you on a trip you won’t soon forget. Armed with a barrel full of massive riffs and sharp tongued lyrics, the Bones will soak your soul with rock n roll and leave you reminded why rock is right".   "Tracks" is a filthy, groovy piece of hard hitting blues rock. Think Fireball Ministry, The Company Band, Five Horse Johnson, Down,... but with a more direct, accessible sound. Mississipi Bones is a band that gives you exactly what you would expect, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The perfect soundtrack for a good ol' Southern bar brawl. This thing rocks, the dirty heavy kinda way. Check it out, support these guys, leave a shout . mississippibones.bandcamp.com Physical needs: CD Baby / Amazon MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Dopefight - Gurt Split (2012)

Image
Brighton's Dopefight was amongst my favorite newcomers back in 2010 . I patiently waited to inject my subwoofer once again with those angry weedian grooves, mountainous riffs & sludgy breakdowns. Dopefight returns together with London's Gurt on this mighty split, featuring 2 brand new tracks from each band. I'm not really familiar with Gurt, but after hearing "Dudes with Beards with Cats" I was kinda sold to their swinging crusty, old school sludge sound (+1 for the hilarious promo clip). Check out more material from these guys on the Bandcamp link below, definitely a band to look into. As expected, Dopefight hits it like a motherfucker on this split. "Stonk" immediatly grabs you & stuffs a truckload of beefy riffs in your auditory canal. The second track "Green Solace" is kinda short but does it's job (I'm talking about 1:33), fair enough. In a nutshell, this sweet 7'' is definatly worth it for anyone that's into a

Gandhi's Gunn - The Longer The Beard The Harder The Sound (2012)

Image
One of the earlier band request when this blog was still young. Gandhi's Gunn is an Italian four-piece, and they just released their second full-length; "The Longer The Beard The Harder The Sound". This is heavy straightforward stoner/ hard rock with an excessive amount of hair on it's back. Thick riffs, furious grooves, heavy vocals & some unexpected songwriting/ concepts ('flood' is a fine example). Not the best or most original sounds out there, but a solid album by a band that brings us back to the essence of heavy rock music. For fans of Mustasch, Nightstalker & Planet Of Zeus! Check it out & support these guys here . gandhisgunn.com Physical needs: taxidriverstore.com/store MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Snail - Terminus (2012)

Image
California's Snail formed in '92, one of those small but legendary underground bands in the early stoner/ doom scene. You should all remember their comeback album "Blood" (released after a hiatus of 15 years). The opener on that thing has some of the most utterly heavy and memorable riffs known to man. A personal favorite. Terminus is Snail's third full-length, a monster that came outta nowhere. Found it on coincidence through Bandcamp, streamed it, loved it. Terminus is filled with ten ton riffs, originality, a good 70's vibe & hints of psychedelica. A heavy, stoned piece of sonic bliss. Great to see these guys returning through the current music platforms. Longtime fans & newcomers alike should definitely c heck out this album! Slow = Heavy. snailhq.bandcamp.com Physical needs: snailhq.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Tank86/ Sardonis Giveaway! - Winners

Image
More than 100 answers from all over the world, filled with outstanding poetry, straightforwardness and random hilarity. I absolutely love you guys for all these wonderful contributions. I made a small group of answers I enjoyed the most & randomly selected 3 winners; Why would you want to have the new Tank86/ Sardonis split? "To drown out the incessant samba music that plays every day in my neighborhood." -Dan, San Francisco "I would love the split for my cousin who currently resides in China. He was the one who introduced me to stoner rock in the first place some years ago through a selfmade compilation of Kyuss, Qotsa, Los Natas, Fu manchu, Dozer and the likes. But like I said he now lives in China, and so the music availability is slighty more..uhm..awkward, with youtube and  blogspot and so on not being available over there. However I had made a disc for him this christmas featuring select samples from, amongst other stuff, a lot of goodies from stone

Major Kong - Doom For The Black Sun (2012)

Image
Poland's Major Kong, an underground favorite back in 2011 . The band has returned from it's muddy swamps to release "Doom For The Black Sun". 45 lingering minutes filled with psychedelic doom jams. The sound on this thing is raw, heavy & really "pure", it's like these guys are playing a live jam session right in front of you. Major Kong brings their style in the most natural form possible & succeeds with this album. Think of it as Sleep teaming up with Tia Carrera, a dark doomy sound played in a funky, rockin' psychedelic way. Absolutely great tunes, highly recommended! majorkong.bandcamp.com Get yourself a cool shirt: majorkong.bigcartel.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Maria Isn't A Virgin Anymore - The Fall Of Public Man (2011)

Image
With a bandname like "Maria Isn't A Virgin Anymore" you'll definitely catch the listener's attention (for the fans: MIAVA). But is there more to find after such a corny name? Absolutely. This surprisingly young Belgian four piece mixes post-metal with rifftastic stoner jams. A fully instrumental assault following in the footsteps of bands like Russian Circles, Pelican, Tool & Karma To Burn. This thing is filled with awesome grooves, hooks, rock 'n' roll, atmosphere & sexy riffs. MIAVA compiles all these different (sub-)genres & elements to create their own powerful sound. Heavy, intelligent, challenging & fresh. Give these guys a shot, support, and listen without distraction. The Fall Of Public Man is the band's second EP (check out earlier tracks here ). Shebrew - Provenance (2012)

Image
From Birmingham comes Shebrew, a small band with big potential. The weird, doomy sound of Goblin Cock teaming up with the warm fuzzy grooves of Kyuss. This band has a really original sound going on, it's heavy, organic & refreshing. A distinct hybrid of familiar genres. Buried Sleeper - Colosseum (2012)

Image
Buried Sleeper is a rising young band hailing from the UK, "Colosseum" is the their debut full-length. This beast is filled with 7 tracks of thick, fuzzy doom drenched in cloudy psychedelica. I would say the sound on this thing is somewhere between (early) Torche & Sleep. It's damn heavy, colourful, sometimes energetic, and always high on monumental stoned riffage. Throughout the 53 minutes that is Colosseum, the band manages to create a highly listenable trip. A somewhat rare, mystical & sludgy experience. Surprisingly good album! Grab your limited copy on the Bandcamp page below. buriedsleeper.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Brujas del Sol - Moonliner Vol. 2 (2012)

Image
About a month ago I posted Brujas del Sol's first release (HIGHLY recommended). Moonliner Vol. 2 continues where Vol. 1 left off. The first track introduces us to a more groovy, jammin' kinda sound with experimental vocals (think Samsara Blues Experiment). Turns out great, and it shows a band that knows exactly what it's doing. The second track, "Baba Yaga" takes us on a psychedelic surfin' desert boogie, more in the tradition of their original instrumental sound. Kinda sounds like Fatso Jetson when played in a Tarantino movie. Yep, this is another fantastic little EP coming from an amazing free form psychedelic/ desert rock trio. Horisont - Två Sidor Av Horisonten (2009)

Image
"HORISONT from Gothenburg, Sweden, look to the classic hard rock and the bluesy 70′s progressive rock for inspiration." What's more to say about this wonderful band? Horisont reminds us why Sweden is so damn great when it comes to this type of music. Another winner next to Witchcraft, Graveyard & Asteroid. Smooth bluesy psychedelic rock with solid vocals, all in a top notch production. This is the band's debut album, check it out asap! Physical needs: Crusher Records MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Psyconauts - Planet X (2012)

Image
"With long songs, post-grunge vocals and massive fuzz the band combines a monumental riffing attitude with psychedelic sounds, inspired by stoner rock and doom metal." From Alessandria, Italy comes a band that's fueled by a passion of spaced out grooves & fuzzy stoner rock. When the first riff kicks in you instantly know what to expect from Psyconauts debut album. Heavy psyched out (stating the obvious), desert worshipping fuzz rock following in the footsteps of Acrimony , Sleep & Ufomammut. Horse Latitudes - Awakening (2012)

Image
Dark, mesmerizing sludge/ doom from Helsinki, Finland. Horse Latitudes combines 2 bass guitar with crushing drum work to create a truly unique sonic experience. Think Neurosis, Sons Of Otis & early Cathedral. This is a surprisingly good band that will drag you down in a black pool of slow, unholy DOOM. Don't miss it! Confidant Girls Embrace Yellow Pants

The yellow pant trend is here to stay, which is great because I will NEVER get enough.

Windhand - Windhand (2012)

Image
Richmond's Windhand really impressed me back in 2010 with their Practice Space Demo . It had that doomy, fuzzed out vintage sound with hints of psychedelica & spot on female vocals. Their s/t full-length continues this lovely style with 5 killer tracks. I see this band as the missing link between Acid King & Electric Wizard. From the sound to the atmosphere & production; everything just fits. This underground slab of wonderfully crushing, ghostly doom is just waiting to be discovered. Don't let it pass... windhandva.bandcamp.com Physical needs: windhand.bigcartel.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Easter Ensemble Chic

Image
I found these ladies at yesterday's Easter parade in New York.  Are they Easter Chic? I really like the pink Easter turban.
