Review: Odyssey - Abysmal Despair (2012)

Sweden's "Odyssey" is quite hard to describe, their approach is straightforward while staying experimental in the rocks-like-hell department. Imagine Nick Oliveri's Mondo Generator with a more raw, sludgier & overall heavier sound, in the likes of early Melvins maybe. Here's a band that's definitely not afraid to break barriers & try something else for a change. "Abysmal Despair" is Odyssey's debut full-length released through Transubstans Records.

One of the more memorable tracks on this thing has to be "Wicked Witch" (known from the 7'' split with the revamped Black Pyramid), a rifftastic sludgy stoner rock anthem. Others are somewhat hit & miss, but there's plenty to explore. Love it or hate it, this is a pounding lesson in stoner, sludge, noise & garage rock with some really rough edges. Odyssey is Swedish greatness and they delivered a good, fun album for those who like their stoner rock different & dirty...
