Dead Branches - 3 Track Promo (2012)

Image
Don't you just love it when a band completely surprises you with the tunes you crave for? Canada's Dead Branches is a perfect example. Looking at the front cover, one could expect some generic post-rock, but no. Behind that gloomy forest lies an assault of heavy riffage, masterful songwriting & kick ass grooves. Imagine Baroness's first EP, add some Karma To Burn & Pelican, and there you have it. Dead Branches is a 2-man instrumental project by members of Sorceress . This is a compilation of their 3 tracks found through Bandcamp. Highly recommended! deadbranches.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Maria Isn't A Virgin Anymore - The Fall Of Public Man (2011)

Image
With a bandname like "Maria Isn't A Virgin Anymore" you'll definitely catch the listener's attention (for the fans: MIAVA). But is there more to find after such a corny name? Absolutely. This surprisingly young Belgian four piece mixes post-metal with rifftastic stoner jams. A fully instrumental assault following in the footsteps of bands like Russian Circles, Pelican, Tool & Karma To Burn. This thing is filled with awesome grooves, hooks, rock 'n' roll, atmosphere & sexy riffs. MIAVA compiles all these different (sub-)genres & elements to create their own powerful sound. Heavy, intelligent, challenging & fresh. Give these guys a shot, support, and listen without distraction. The Fall Of Public Man is the band's second EP (check out earlier tracks here ). Keep an eye out on MIAVA's debut full-length, to be released this year! myspace.com/mariaisntavirginanymore Physical needs: Ozium records MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Apocalipsis - Apocalipsis (2012)

Image
Apocalipsis is a real promising band from Mexico City. They play their own mixture of instrumental post, stoner & sludge metal; Think Pelican meeting up with UK's Capricorns. These guys deliver a really hard-hitting & believable sound from start to finish. Something I would expect from a decent post-metal label, but this one here is 100% DIY & free. Amazing tunes! Year Of No Light - Nord (2007)

Image
Debut full-length by the French atmospheric/ post-metal band 'Year Of No Light'. I previously posted the band's latest record on here, which was an absolutely fantastic piece of sonic bliss. It's quite interesting to know how these guys sounded in '06 (before they focused on a completely instrumental sound). There is quite some evil sludge-esque power on here, from the riffs to the harsh vocal style. The sound of 'Nord' is filled with hate, but also with lots of atmosphere; A great & daring combination. Any fan of hard-hitting post-metal with a fitting ambient tone should give this a shot! Originally released in 2006, on Radar Swarm records . Currently out of print & reissued in 2007 (CD & 2xLP) on Crucial Blast . Physical needs: Amazon / Crucial Blast MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2 Scans Download

Kosmograd - Kosmograd (2011)

Image
Unique post-sludge with proggy & psychedelic elements. What I love about 'Kosmograd' is the raw yet thick production & the highly instrumental focus (think Omega Massif, Russian Circles, Jakob, Pelican,..). Quite a surprise when the vocals kick in on the second track. Not exactly my cup of tea after the fantastic opener, but it's executed with the right moderation in the layered & dynamic sound this band has to offer. Another highly recommended (free) Bandcamp release! "Toronto post-metal band creates the perfect winter music, moving at the pace of a snow drift, crushing heaviness & girth pull themselves forward. Slow distortion blistered guitar riffs, crackle and break through walls of cymbal hits, as they form their own wall of drone that washes over everything only easing up as we reach the calm in the storm., Quiet post-rock guitar artistry, builds on itself free of the chains & weight of distortion. Building back into the distortion laden caust...

Le Kraken - Exalt (2011)

Image
Hard-hitting (post-)sludge from Montréal, Canada. Le Kraken creates a thick wall of pounding riffs, drums & depraved vocals. A dirty, fuzzed out sound that goes perfectly with this kind of music. Think early Isis, Godflesh, Neurosis,.. Worth checking out! myspace.com/krakenrockmusic lekraken.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Omega Massif - Karpatia (2011)

Image
Omega Massif has to be one of my favorite bands when it comes to instrumental /post-metal. These guys are masters in creating a unique, natural atmosphere through their instrumentals. Heavy as a mountain, while staying fresh & dramatic. This is a band that redefines the intelligent & instrumental sound of heaviness; It's massive, relentless & devastating. Breeding a vast, gloom-filled atmosphere. I think 'Karpatia' follows in the footsteps of it's predecessor and acts more as a direct sequel to Geisterstadt . This is the Omega Massif we know in it's purest & heaviest form. Horseback - The Invisible Mountain (2009)

Image
Been listening to this masterpiece non stop in the last weeks. Recently found out about this band through Relapse records and I'm impressed to say the least! Horseback is a highly atmospheric/ ambient/ post-whatever band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Their sound is kinda hard to describe, To give an idea: the same kind of immersion when listening to Sunn O))) & Earth, while meeting up with the unique psychedelic vibes of 35007 & Mother-Unit. A dark, hypnotizing sonic trip full of emotion & wonderful simplicity. I highly recommend this one.. Adrift For Days - The Lunar Maria (2010)

Image
This wonderful request kinda flew under my radar, finally sharing it on here. Adrift For Days is another great discovery from Australia. They play a unique blend of psyched out post-/sludge metal. Definitely one of those huge, layered & 'epic' sounding bands. Heavy, oozing riffs with desolate vocals in a thick fuzzy production (think a more bluesy Neurosis, early Isis, Acid King, Sleep, Electric Wizard, YOB,...). What's not to love? Tombs - Path Of Totality (2011)

Image
Recently got my hands on this one after reading some great reviews . And I was quite unfamiliar with this obscure band, until now.. I would highly recommend this release to anyone that is into extreme (& rather progressive) metal. Tombs is a one of a kind band, influenced by many things. On here, you'll find Sludge, Doom, Grindcore, Post-, Black & Death Metal mixed into one apocalyptic wall of sound. Path Of Totality has to be one of the most hard hitting, original & conceptual metal releases of 2011. Get this on Vinyl if you can! myspace.com/tombsbklyn Tombs on Relapse Records. Sorceress - Demo (2011)

Image
Impressive instrumental post-sludge from Canada. This is a great demo that brings us back to the early days of the Savannah, Georgia scene. It's hard not to mention that these guys love their Baroness & Kylesa. Sorceress is a an ambitious band, and they sure know how to deliver some solid grooves. I highly enjoyed this Demo, and would recommend it to anyone that is looking for some post-barbarian sludge with an edge! Any fan of Kylesa, Black Tusk, Baroness & Howl should give this one a shot. sorceress.bandcamp.com MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Judd Madden - Drown/ Float/ Waterfall (2011)

Image
A colossal request: Judd Madden from Melbourne, Australia. This solo musician delivers some amazing tunes with these 3 monumental releases. A lengthy, but highly rewarding experience. Influenced by everything sludge, stoner, doom, psychedelic, ambient, progressive & post-metal. Think Pelican, Boris, Neurosis, Isis, Flood & especially Boris to name a few. Drown takes us on a rather dark & raw sludge/ doom trip. Float is a light, dreamy progressive/post-rockish experience. Waterfall (the first release by Judd & currently my favorite) has a more varied approach with some deep riffs & refreshing interludes. From the production to the instruments, this is an impressive one-man job. Some down-tuned destructive riffs in here, warm acoustic guitars, and a lovely piano. Expect a dynamic & highly atmospheric sound. My only (small) complaint is that the overall package could use some extra polishing; the sound can get quite repetitive & the lack of any vocals or even ...

Awooga - V Column (2011)

Image
'Awooga started in late 2008 jamming away in a cold little decrepit practice room in Sheffield city centre across from a 86 year old Master Steel Forger who once made knives for Bill Clinton and Elvis Presley. No lie, he showed us the photos. Our sound is heavy, melodic and atmospheric. It's a bit proggy and we have been told " you guys sound like a star exploding". Have a listen. We have played with some really good bands in the past and still do now such as Saviours, Kruger, Downslide, and many more that we have been privileged to share bills with in the past.' - myspace.com/awoogalol Refreshing grooves from Sheffield, UK. Awooga brings forth a rather eerie mix of alternative prog & post-metal. I would recommend this album to anyone who is looking for a more versatile and clean sound in the genre. V Column is a highly accessible record and I'm sure alot of listeners will appreciate the progressive spaced-out sound on here. Check it out. Love it, ...

Vattnet Viskar - Demo (2011)

Image
'Vattnet Viskar is an ambient black metal/doom band from southern New Hampshire. Formed as a 2-man project, a demo was released, and it quickly became obvious that there was interest in the music. Recruiting members to fill out the band, the sound evolved into what it is today. With influences ranging from Neurosis to Gorgoroth, it is hard to classify the sound, although the band describes themselves as “the east coast answer to pacific black metal”. Already sharing the stage with Shai Hulud, Woods of Ypres, and Black Anvil, it is clear there are big things in store for this band.' - last.fm Like it says in the bio; from Neurosis to Gorgoroth. Although this is more black & ambient (Wolves in the Throne Room comes to mind). Not my 'usual' genre but a good listen nonetheless. Annapurna - I Am A Leaf (2011)

Image
Annapurna From Belfast, UK. 'I Am A Leaf' is their first self-released single, and it's a great attempt through the vast fields of post-metal. Omega Massif & Pelican come to mind. Definitely curious what these guys can pull off in the future, this is quite a great debut single to start with! Check it out. 'Annapurna's largely instrumental sound ranges from delicate ambient melodies to oppressive walls of noise, crushing monolithic riffs to tense driving soundscapes, sometimes brooding, sometimes biting - all accompanied by a mesmerizing and powerful live show.' myspace.com/annapurnamusic Annapurna on Metal Archives Visit the band's Bandcamp page to get it in physical (limited to 100 copies)/ digital form. Kurouma - 3 (2011)

Image
'Kurouma' from Jyväskylä, Finland. Solid post-/sludge metal in the vein of Isis, Cult Of Luna, Neurosis, Mouth Of The Architect,... It's done before (and alot), but these guys pull it off quite nicely. '3' is an interesting, progressive & atmospheric album in a great production, like we would expect from a genre like this. I love the guitar work & layered structures on here. Not sure about some of the vocal parts, but these are just backing up the instrumentals really (which are damn great at some parts). So here we have a rather classic, traditional approach to a genre we all know & love. It has that same 'epic' feeling, tempo changes, atmospheric interludes & lots of heavy riffs with a touch of doom & sludge. Tracks like 'To Dust' & 'Through the Darkness' will certainly keep me coming back for more enlightening post-metal needs.. Thanks to Jussi/Kurouma for another great contribution! kuroumaband.bandcamp.com myspace...

Self-preservation - Cleanse (2010)

Image
Fresh post/ doom metal from Quebec, Canada. An interesting listen from a new band who experiments with a layered, atmospheric & dynamic sound. Depressing, mellow, dark, but also light & refreshing. This demo has a rather clean/ sterile sound, from the instruments to the samples that go with it. It takes us somewhere between post-rock & doom metal. Good start! myspace.com/selfpreservationofficial self-preservation.bandcamp.com soundcloud.com/self-preservation MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2

Dying Sun - 12212010 (2010)

In 2009, an exclusive song “Sleep Unending” was released on the Abridged Pause Recordings compilation “Diluvian Temperals”. The album ‘12212010” was released on December 21st, 2010.' - last.fm Thanks to the band for sending me this, for all your experimental post-metal needs. Deadbird - The Head And The Heart (2005)

Image
Raw sludge/ post-metal from Fayetteville, Arkansas. These guys deliver highly dynamic songs in a rather melancholic package. Distorted, filthy, atmospheric,... (don't forget the pounding riffs, we all love those). Neurosis meets Cult of Luna on a High on Fire dinner. myspace.com/deadbird ATH Store MP3@320Kbps Download or Download 2
