Orchid - Capricorn (2011)
‘Capricorn’ is a great album on which this band showcases their Black Sabbath-inspired sound in a beautiful way. Next to Sabbath you can hear some other influences from the 70s like Led Zeppelin, but what I feel is more important is the fact that Orchid isn’t trying to prove anything; they’re not pretending to be a band from the 70s. The production of this album simply is up-to-date and as far as I’m concerned this band is miles ahead of all those wannabe retro acts. Next to the musical aspect Orchid also delivers some stunning packaging. The artwork by singer and tattoo-artist Theo Mindell is great and it is all packaged in a sort of gatefold sleeve. There’s even an edition available in book form. Fans of 70s heavy rock and early doom metal in the vein of Black Sabbath and Pentagram should check out Orchid no matter what, this is pure class! -Lords Of Metal
A little late on this classic, in case you missed it: get it! Essential for fans of 70's retro-doom, from Pentagram to Sheavy, Witchcraft & The Devil's Blood. This is Orchid's debut full-length, on The Church Within records.
