Tyranny - Tides Of Awakening (2005)

'While the previous work of Tyranny called ‘Bleak Vistae’ was a release of proper quality with a low profile, this time around they definitely opt for a more distinct own sound. I must say that they succeed in doing so. The blunt, crushing and ultra-depressive funeral doom is slow, monolithic and as dark as the deepest shafts of Satan’s soul. Exactly how it must be done. Riffs are played for consecutive minutes, keyboards in the background provide listening references and the grunts are comfortably deep (but completely indecipherable). So it comes as no surprise that this isn’t a doomy snack but more of an eight-course diner. All this however is of no concern when the listener fails to keep his attention due to lack of tension often seen in funeral doom releases, fortunately ‘Tides Of Awakening’ doesn’t suffer from this mistake. To get the idea of how it actually sounds, think of Evoken meets Esoteric. One of the better, extreme doom metal releases this year I reckon.' -Lords Of Metal Archive

Crushing funeral doom from Finland (since it's been a while). For fans of Ahab, Asunder, Colosseum,... Tides Of Awakening has to be one of the most desolate & monstrous abums i've ever heard. This is their second full-length, released on Firedoom Music.
