Sahara Surfers - Sonar Pilot (2011)

I'm excited to bring you guys another 'big' review here at Stonerobixxx. Sahara Surfers, one of the more recent bands out there in the magical world that is stoner rock brings us 'Sonar Pilot'. To dive right in; The intro grabs you immediately & takes the listener on a deadly, yet colourful trip of fuzz, psychedelic & stoner rock. Austria's Sahara Surfers are back with a vengeance: heavier riffs, dreamy energetic vocals, a more diverse take on the songwriting,.. All in a rock solid production.

I think this is one of those underground bands that feels instantly 'fresh'. taking different influences & blending them in their own original form. With Sonar Pilot this formula expands even more. The vocals are more balanced this time & give the sound a whole new interesting dimension, or: how heavy fuzzed out riffs go hand in hand with tough but clean female vocals (take the track 'Ganjalf' as an example). Sahara Surfers certainly nails it like no other...

Instrumentally the sound on Sonar Pilot is an uplifting mix of bands like Kyuss, Dozer & Colour Haze. Especially when this record starts to rock. Overall this is a really solid & inspired piece of work. Considering the genre, Sonar Pilot definitely stands its ground in terms of musical creativity. This album cries for at least 3 listens and invites you to come back & explore it's depths. A solid and logical follow up to Spacetrip On A Paper Plane. Highly recommended!
